Mesima is the substance to enhance the anti-cancer immunological activities containing protein bounded polysaccharide (PPLA) that is obtained in the process to massively cultivate, extract and refine pure mycelium from fruit body of Phellinus linteus that is called as Sang-Hwang (galenical name) that is a kind of mushroom. The research team of Dr. Chihara in Tokyo National Cancer Research Center in Japan found that hydrothermal extract of Phellinus linteus suppresses solid tumor sarcoma 180 a lot in 1976 (Protein ·Nucleic Acid·Enzyme, p155-157, Volume 59). As shown in the following table, the sarcoma 180 tumor was transplanted in a mouse and hot-water extract of 27 kinds of mushroom was injected in the right groin of mice to examine the suppression rate of tumor proliferation. As a result, it is found that hydrothermal extract of Phellinus linteus shows predominant suppression effect as 96.7% compared to other mushrooms.

Phellinus linteus grows naturally in trunks of mulberry tree that is more than 100 years old and shall grown for 30 to 40 years to make a fruit body being used for medical application. In addition, the growth conditions such as humidity, temperature and lighting are very delicate so that Phellinus linteus is very rare in the nature. So it is impossible to collect and take a fruit body in the nature. And it is not certain whether it is true fruit body or not. Moreover, according to Big Dictionary of Chinese Medicine (Jung-yak-dae-sa-jeon), natural fruit body contains agaric acid that stimulates the central nerve system and causes severe emesis and diarrhea so that it is not recommendable to directly take it.
Han Kook Shin Yak collected a fruit body of Phellinus linteus that grows naturally in Korea, separated pure mycelium and proved that it was Phellinus linteus through DNA analysis by PCR. Pure mycelium that is obtained can be massively cultivated as Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology and Han Kook Shin Yak has jointly performed G7 project that is national research project under the supervision of the Ministry of Science and Technology for ten years, and medical supplied called “Mesima” is developed as separating substances of which the pharmaceutical effect is approved. Mesima is manufactured and supplied as the special medical supplies that Korea Food and Drug Administration of Ministry of Health and Welfare approves as immunity adjuvant. It is the first in the world to commercialize the pharmaceutical effect that Phellinus linteus contains.
It is confirmed that Mesima is not harmful for human body by the clinical toxicity test of Toxicology research center of Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (GLP approved research institute) and has the strong anti-cancer immuno-stimulating effect. As differently from other anti-cancer chemical therapy that are already acknowledged through preclinical tests and clinical tests in Korea and abroad, Mesima is the anti-cancer immuno-stimulating agent of new concept as activating the immune system that is natural treatment function in a human body and letting it to treat a cancer. Especially, when it is prescribed in combination with anti-cancer drugs that is chemical therapy, it is the immune anti-cancer drugs that significantly reduces the toxicity of anti-cancer chemical therapy and increases the medical effect.
